AATB’s Dr. Melissa Greenwald Co-Leads Publication on the Limitations of Real-World Data for Tissue Banking and Organ Donation Policies

November 19, 2024

AATB is pleased to announce the publication of "Real-World Data to Improve Organ and Tissue Donation Policies: Lessons Learned from the Tissue and Organ Donor Epidemiology Study (TODES)," co-led by AATB's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Melissa Greenwald.

This HHS-sponsored study, conducted between 2012 and 2016, had three primary goals:

  • To develop a framework for the standardized collection and analysis of demographic, screening, and infectious disease testing data from deceased organ, tissue, and eye donors, including referral-only donors.
  • To identify challenges in gathering such data consistently in a standardized format.
  • To explore the limitations and potential biases within the collected data.

The manuscript offers an overview of the transplant process, highlights the TODES approach to real-world data (RWD) collection, and shares key findings. It also discusses how advances in electronic data collection systems can pave the way for future studies and improve the balance between transplant safety and availability.
